Bella Donna Couture started in a small home office in Hampton, Virginia in the fall of 2002. I had a friend who always carried the cutest handbags, and I wanted one. The problem was that her bags were custom made by a lady out of state and there was no way for me to order one from her. So I decided I would make one myself. I had some sewing experience, after doing my daughter's nursery decor and some of her clothing, so I figured I could put together a handbag if I could just find a pattern.
Well, let's just say that my first couple of attempts were not too pretty. I kept trying though, and eventually I came up with my own pattern that fit my needs perfectly. Not too big, but big enough to haul all that a mom of 5 needs on a daily basis. So after my first couple of failures I actually created something that wasn't half bad. Well, it was cute enough to carry anyway.
At the time, my family and I attended a very large church in the area. I carried my new bag with me to worship that Sunday, and one of my friends stopped me in the hallway as I shuffled my kiddos to the nursery. She asked me where I got my bag from, and I told her that I had actually made it myself. She seemed somewhat shocked, and asked if I could make her one too. Well that was my first order, and from there the word of mouth and referrals took over.
Soon after that I did my first "purse party" and was absolutely floored at the response I got. I sold over $800 worth of custom ordered handbags that afternoon! Well, I guess that you could say that the rest is history. I have designed and produced many, many more since that first order, and every one has been a blessing to the success and growth of my company.
